Effective ruleset
Apply the 2025-26 NHL standard to NHL footage
The worked decision path uses the National Hockey League Official Rules 2025-2026 and its video-review framework. IIHF, NCAA, and USA Hockey games must be checked against their own current rulebooks. Crease position is evidence, but the NHL question is not resolved by drawing a circle around an attacker's skates: officials reconstruct contact, the goaltender's ability to establish or recover position, and any action by a defending player.
Review the play from before the contact. Identify who initiated it, whether the attacker had a reasonable way to avoid it, what the defender contributed, and whether the disputed contact affected the goaltender's ability to defend the scoring play. Then follow the puck to the goal. This timeline is more reliable than beginning with the final frame, because a legal position can become interference through later contact and an apparent crease collision can have been caused by the defending team.
